A QUICK FLASHBACK INTO SOUTH WOODFORD

As it is located in East London, South Woodford comes under the London Borough of Redbridge. Historically, Woodford was once known as an ancient parish lying about 8 miles north-east of the City of London and was created on the border of River Roding. With time it was separated into four areas around the river that are now known as South Woodford, Woodford Green, Woodford Wells and Woodford Bridge.

The northern part of South Woodford developed a lot quicker, with a mass of cottages around St Mary’s Church and grander houses towards the east. It was in 1856, following the opening of South Woodford Station, originally known as George Lane, that a network of surrounding streets and houses were built and extended as far as Snaresbrook.

South Woodford is known for its iconic places such as the 200-year-old pub, The George, and the Odeon Cinema, once known as the Majestic Theatre, which opened in 1934 (the only cinema in the area). With places such as these remaining to stand the test of time, it is a testament to the immense history enwrapped in the development of this rural town. One which was swiftly accelerated during the early 20 th Century, especially between the wars, as it became known as the entertainment centre of the wider borough.

MODERN DAY SOUTH WOODFORD

The quaint poise of this suburban area echoes throughout its modern-day establishments, especially along George Lane, the main hub of South Woodford. It is here that you will find an enticing choice of restaurants and bars, along with supermarkets, the library and the only iconic cinema in the area, as you now know -The Odeon. As for its ever so convenient main tube station, its central line connection will have you relishing the joys of Oxford Circus in just under 30 minutes.

South Woodford’s depth of character emanates through its contrasting array of properties. From its charming stock of Victorian/Edwardian family homes to its more modern looking apartments, it is equally a place for both young professionals and families to find solace. With city and rural delights such as Epping Forest all within convenient reach, there is an undeniable allure about this charming town.
